Literally, one of my favorite people on this planet is Michelle Money. Another favorite is Laura Armstrong. So when they started MM and L, I literally became their biggest fan. I am sure you will see that I mention them or their show a lot in my blog, but that’s because they are a big fashion and beauty inspiration to me!
So Michelle has a signature look of curls and I love it oh so much. I had never mastered the art of casually curling my hair until she taught me how. She can teach you too, if you click here for the MM&L YouTube channel.
Late the other night, I was feeling extra primpy and had some down time, so I curled my hair using Michelle’s technique and made them extra curly. The reason I did this is because I had every intent of sleeping on it and wearing it wavy the next day. It worked out VERY well. See below to try it out!
Step 1: Section out hair. I do about 4 layers all around my head, working from the base of the neck up. I have pretttyyy thick hair, so I need to do a lot. But if you have less hair, you could get away with 3 layers.
Step 2: Spray all over the section with a thermal protectant/curl spray or mousse. I used the Thermal Styling Spray # 19 by Kenra which is a protectant AND a hairspray. It always works so well for my hair in keeping it curled and safe.
Step 3: Comb through the section to make it smooth.
Step 4: Take approximately 1″ wide pieces from the section to curl. I am using my Helen of Troy 1 1/4″ curling iron and am actually using it as a curling wand! It works like a charm for me, but I may be investing in a curling wand sometime in the near future anyway.
Step 5: Wrap the hair around the barrel, away from your face, leaving the last inch or two loose to hold the hair and make sure the bottoms are primarily straight.
Do this all over your head, and really focus on HOW you want the curls to fall on the top layer.
At this point, you can either wear it as-is, brush through, or sleep on it…depending on the look you are going for. Michelle and Laura are fans of taking a flat iron to it to give it a sexier, messy look!
First I run my fingers through mine and pull it a little out of place, then I like to style mine with Euphora Illuminate Shine Mist and styling paste or creme through the ends. I actually LOVE the Suave for Men Styling Paste.
**Helpful Tip: If you want, you can wear your hair like this for 2-3 (or more if you’re blessed) days at a time. Invest in a good dry shampoo and be sure to spray it in your roots after curling and in the morning, at night or throughout the day as needed.**
This is how it looks after it was slept on and brushed out!
Hope you all enjoy this little step-by-step! Tweet me a pic of your hair using this tutorial! I would love to see! (@theprettyplus)
