Brush Bath: How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Brush Bath

Do you ladies wash your brushes at least once a week? I don’t. I know, SO GROSS…but I forget to! (My bad.) I probably do it every 3-4 weeks or as-needed. (But I should do it more often.)

For so long, I was using “brush cleansers.” By MAC or Sonia Kashuk…but I have found that best my brushes ever look and feel is when I follow this easy brush-washing technique.

1. Place a tiny dot of dish soap or anti-bacterial soap on the palm of your hand.
2. Wet the hairs of the brush lightly and swirl in the soap. I do circles on my hand and when it gets to foamy or overly colorful, I rinse lightly, then swirl again until the brush seems totally cleansed.
3. Then rinse the brush thoroughly, with the hairs pointed toward the drain. Don’t put water directly on the top of the hairs, because if you get too much water in the handle of the brush, it will loosen the glue and make the hairs fall out or it will collect moisture and begin to mildew or mold.
4. Apply a tiiiiny amount of conditioner, then rinse until the slimy feeling is gone.
5. Air dry flat overnight (or longer) depending on the size of the brush.

I find that this technique gets my brushes the cleanest and softest and it’s the most cost effective. How do YOU clean your brushes?
