How many times have you walked through the store, head hung down, making the loooong trek to the back of the store to get to your tiny, little plus size section? Yeah…me too. I have a whole LIST of things I wish about “Plus Size Clothing.” Read below!
I wish Plus Size Clothing…
- WASN’T UGLY!
- See the picture above. I mean, not everything needs to say BABY GIRL or some city name on them. Not everything needs to be some form of tie-dyed or couch floral. Not everything needs to be made of polyester. Not everything needs to be decked out in rhinestones! Just STOP it.
- WAS CHEAPER!
- Like, Lane Bryant and Torrid are expensive! (And not my fave- see below.)
- Things in the plus size section can’t cost $20-50 MORE to make in a larger size! Some of my favorites even charge when I like to call the “fat surcharge.” (Yes, even my beloved Old Navy!) Get with the program, merchandisers! Stop pricing plus size clothing so high!
- MERCHANDISERS WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT…
- I’m not a grandma (ahem, big box stores.) I don’t want capris and a bedazzled t-shirt for every occasion.
- I’m not gothic (ahem, Torrid.) I don’t wear grungy black with plaid all day every day. For that matter, Torrid, I don’t like having to pay so much for your cheaply made clothing!
- I’m HERE (ahem, Target.) Over the years, your plus section has dwindled to close to nothing in most stores. Pure Energy is a great brand, it just needs some more room to blossom. We would buy that stuff up like CRAZY!
- I’m not a “typical size” (ahem, Lane Bryant.) If you are going to make jeans to “fit everyone” please consider the Apple Shape girls! I can’t wear like, any of your clothes! Not all plus size girls are created equally!
- HAD MORE BIG NAME BRAND APPEAL!
- I really love certain clothes that you see everyone wearing. I wish I could wear LuLu Lemon, Under Armor, J. Crew, Banana Republic, etc…but these brands don’t offer ANY plus options.
- Some brands only give me a taste! Nike is the first thing that comes to mind. With hundreds of option for “regular” sizes, it hurts my heart that they only have 7-10 options for plus size women. (And that’s being generous.)
- Some brands that embrace plus sizes don’t even do it right. Forever 21 is one of my go-to’s, but their 3x fits in between a 1x/2x! SO anyone who is actually a 3x or is busty/hippy, won’t even be able to fit in them. How annoying! Many other companies do this too.
Sorry for this little rant, guys! I just get super frustrated sometimes! How many of you deal with these things and more? I think that it’s just ridiculous! What are your biggest frustrations with plus size clothing or shopping in general?

As an apple shape myself, I feel your pain! It’s so hard to find clothing that fits well and doesn’t cost a fortune.
Besides Forever 21, do you have any favorite places to shop?
I usually love Old Navy’s plus clothes! For some good, surprisingly high quality basics, I like H&M. They even have stuff online. Nordstrom/Macy’s are always go-to’s. Another place is Nordstrom Rack. They have a fair amount online, but if you like in-store shopping, they usually have a few racks of plus clothes that are really nice!
it gets even worse when you live outside of America….i live in Jamaica and i have to wait until i travel to the States to purchase clothes…Most times I shop at Ross, Cato or Ashley Stewart. I am an apple shape girl too.
Oh goodness!!! I can’t imagine that. It’s so unfortunate. Sorry you have to deal with that!
I completely agree with everything you said here! I am currently doing some research about what actual plus-size girls would love to see in new brands that would sell their sizes- I’ve heard a lot about more neutral colors, less crazy tacky patterns, etc! Is there anything specific you can think of that you didn’t add here? Stuff you would LOVE to wear but is super hard to find in higher sizes because the brands that sell it just don’t go that high? I’d love your input. Thanks!
I think in general, we just want the same clothes everyone else has access to! A nice, well made t-shirt, a leather jacket, some pretty “boutique” clothes… I just think that if you are plus sized these days, you have a few more options, but they all seem to be “younger” now. I’m not 21 anymore, but I am far from 65! The gap really seems to be in the young to mid-aged adult.
