There are two “big” shows on television right now that focus on plus size women. I’m not talking about those medical shows (shout out to My 600 lb Life that I can binge watch for whole weekends!) These are shows that merely give you life of a bigger girl. I’m fascinated, but also kind of offended that I haven’t been asked to be on one. I mean, look at this picture above. I was made for this!
The two shows I’m talking about are My Big Fat Fabulous Life on TLC and Big Women: Big Love on Lifetime. Although they have two VERY different casts, they all base around plus size women, dating, and life. You can read my thoughts on both shows below.
My Big Fat Fabulous Life– This is the one EVERYONE keeps asking me about. I hear “Have you seen it?…What do you think?” just about every day. Weekly, I hear “OMG, she reminds me of you so much!” Really, I’m flattered! I think there are some awesome similarities. We both have PCOS, are outgoing, live life no matter or size, and are absolutely hilarious. ;) Her show is my favorite of the two because it’s more about her life, struggles, and how she overcomes it all. Her #NoBodyShame mantra is something I love and you can tell the show is very big on acceptance, but also change.
I’m a huge fan of her family, especially Babs. I crack up just about every time she opens her mouth. Also, I am haaaardcore #TeamBuddy. Really though, one of my favorite things about the show is how easy it is to relate and how honest it is for anyone, but especially plus sized ladies. Every time Whitney Thore speaks, I feel like I’m having a chat with a friend. I can really appreciate that and am glad she is getting a second season.
Big Women: Big Love– This show is much more on the catty side. It’s a Lifetime TV show, if that tells you anything. The show is more centered around dating as a plus sized woman. I’m not so sold on the drama, but it does make for good TV. I don’t feel like any of the girls really represent a normal, easy-going plus size woman. I think a mid-west spinoff would be a good one to get some more likable characters and some more relationships vs. making out in clubs.
With that being said, I enjoy the show. I can’t say it’s as entertaining as Little Women LA, which is this show’s mini version. (It’s WAY more entertaining.) Jen makes for a good character, especially in the sense that she is REALLY sensitive to the word “FAT.” I have never been sensitive to it- I have fat on myself, I am a fat person…I don’t relate it to other words that she says it is comparable to, but it is interesting to see the viewpoint. (FYI, I have had someone write me to tell me to stop using the word FAT as a descriptor before. I politely declined, but can respect their decision to not read if it’s offensive.)
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you love these up and coming plus size TV shows? Would you ever be on one if you were approached?
Yes I like these shows. Especially Whitney. I think she doesn’t apologize for who she is but also doesn’t say that having extra weight is good for you! The dating show is fun, but Jen, please, I feel sorry for her!
